One Piece Ep. 1019 Review
“Otama’s Secret Plan! Operation Kibi Dango!!”
After such serious events, this episode is going to shift gears and kind of just be slightly silly and while I won’t call anything filler, it’s not going to feel important for a chunk of it. The post-recap period just goes into some nonsense with those that follow Kaido and it’s hard to care about more characters being introduced at this point, especially since they’re just low-ranking types with name-character leaders whose names you can barely remember anyway. It jumps around to a few different groups in the first half and works its story with Otama as she tries to figure out what she wants to do after everyone else left to go Onigashima. The main thing is that it’s her paired with the Animal Kingdom Pirate group and it’s just mind-numbingly dull.
The show does perk up a bit later when we see her aligned with some of the Straw Hats as the timeline moves forward, and I liked that we got more time seeing Chopper working to help save those impacted by the ice zombie thing that’s going on. There’s some action thrown into all of it to keep it active but there’s just not a lot that really cements in a way that makes it compelling. You know it’s just mostly padding and giving some of the characters a chance to have their own moment, but even then it’s not like it’s a big moment or anything. It progresses well in showing some of this, and it’s welcome to get Nami involved in the fight again and to see Usopp and all, but after the scale of the fight we just had with Kaido and Luffy with the others there, it’s hard to get too jazzed about such a low-level fight that those involved should be able to smack around with ease.
In Summary:
After watching the Straw Hats’ departure to Onigashima, Tama wondered if there was anything she could do to help the Straw Hats and the samurai. Now that she’s here on Onigashima, it’s time to execute her powerful plan – Operation Kibi Dango!
