The material we do get of Luffy and his group going up against Big Mom and Kaido works really well even as short as it is. Seeing the hard fight that goes on here between them, with Luffy and others getting hit really hard by both opponents, really is intense because it’s just pure physical strength and not gimmicks. Of course, a chunk of it does come down to just dialogue when Kaido should be simply stomping on them, but it allows for the big moment of Luffy stepping up to fight once again and protecting Zoro. That’s half of his driving force, to protect his friends, while pursuing his larger dream and journey. The swelling of commitment to this fight toward the end delivers a really good sequence.

In Summary:

In general, there’s a lot to like here. We can see the appeal of what we get with the Akazaya group and the flashback material there. When it comes to Luffy, Zoro, Law, and the rest, their fight with Big Mom and Kaido is moving along in the manner in which we expected it to but it is delivering the goods visually and through the character intensity of what’s going on here. It’s a really great sequence overall and it has a lot of great atmosphere to it that really keys up the intensity. More of this, please!
